在 ChatGPT 推出前，研發商 OpenAI 的員工對項目抱有懷疑的態度，認為建立在兩年前的人工智慧模型上的聊天機器人未必能引起迴響。不過，在 ChatGPT推出僅兩個月後，活躍用戶數已經突破了1億，成為史上用戶成長速度最快的消費級應用程式。根據Sensor Tower的數據，TikTok達到1億用戶用了9個月，Instagram則花了2年半的時間。
